How does one justify the use of energy and resources on excessive things such as art and music while millions of people starve?

(This answer is brought to us by Bro. Mike Bronson. Bro. Mike is the Pastor of West Haven Baptist Church.)

That is an EXTREMELY good question and one I have asked myself. We spend millions of dollars on organized sports in this country while half the world lives on less than $2 a day.

This is probably why America is under judgment and will continue to receive God’s judgment. There is no difference between America and Sodom. Ezek 16:49 "Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had arrogance, abundant food and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy.

Having said that, it is the church, and specifically Southern Baptists that look to spread the gospel worldwide and help people worldwide. IMB & its amazing outreach. The IMB’s World Hunger Fund, 100% of which goes toward food for impoverished countries.

Keep in mind there are also vast quantities of financial aid that would go and have gone to corrupt nations whose rules and kings consume themselves, or actually refuse (Russia, Uganda, North Korea, Zimbabwe, just to name a few examples.) So not everyone is guilty.

Often, no one is able to help in a lasting and permanent way because of the anti-christian worldview that pervades a country. For example, how can you ever bring a decent, law-abiding, Democracy to an Islamic nation? Or a Hindu nation (Hindu nations go hungry because animals are considered sacred and therefore cannot be eaten. And because of their bizarre religion, society operates on a caste system where many people are considered nothing but chattel. It also causes them to do dumb things like dump all dead bodies and waste in rivers. But they drink straight from the rivers because many Hindus believe rivers are “givers of life’. Therefore, they just spread more disease and misery.) , So the most lasting change that we can bring is not throwing money at people in need but its to bring the gospel to their land. The gospel leads to repentance, and a right worldview, and a right worldview leads to better living conditions.
